Northside Music Festival: Saturday Preview

The Northside Music Festival is all about discovering the music and art that Brooklyn has to offer; Saturday is going to be the day that I do mostly that. I fully intend on seeing the Guided By Voices, Waaves & Surfer Blood (yeah I'm going to see them twice in one weekend!) but before and after that there is no real band I feel like I "HAVE" to see. Honestly, I've never really listened to many of the acts playing that day and I'm just going to be a sponge; taking in all that the festival presents. After the jump is a list of lesser-known artists that I'd like to look into on Saturday and I think you should do the same. Even if you're not able to see them live, give them a listen and see what you think!

Luke Rathborne
My good friend Megan is a fan of this guy and at 3:30pm on Saturday he'll be playing Spike Hill.

The Suzan
As Mike posted earlier this year, we saw this band open for Titus Andronicus and god damn were they fun. Since then I haven't really given them listen but I really want to check them out Saturday. They play at 11:15 at Burar Falls on Grand between Roebling and Driggs. Get into it!

Javelin
I've been a fan of these guys ever since I saw a video of Curren$y and Stalley rapping over one of their beats. They're just fun! They are slated to play the Glasslands Gallery on Kent and South 2nd at 11:30. Here's a video of a song they produced entitled "STD Fury". It's absolutely hilarious and not to mention a great beat.

Twin Sister
Twin Sister are a self described experimental pop group from Long Island who got major love from Pitchfork. I never really got into them but wouldn't mind checking them out this weekend. They're playing the Music Hall of Williamsburg at 11:30.

As you can see there are a lot of great bands playing on Saturday and while I wish I could watch them all, its just not feasible. If you're going to be in Brooklyn on Saturday you should absolutely look into these shows! Fun will be had by all!

  1. On some real shit, can't tell you how jealous I am that you saw surfer blood TWICE in 2 nights. But also, how was guided by voices? I've checked them out a bit and they seem pretty legit, so I'm wondering if its worth looking further into their catalogue.

  2. I thought they were awful when they played Sasquatch. I've never listened to their studio material but if it sounds anything like what the played live then I could care less.
